Homemade Naan Bread (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Dough

01 - 1 teaspoon sugar
02 - 1/2 cup warm water
03 - 1/4 oz active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
04 - 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
05 - 1/2 cup plain yogurt
06 - 1 teaspoon salt
07 - 1 tablespoon oil

→ Cooking & Finishing

08 - Oil for greasing the skillet
09 - 3 tablespoons melted butter or ghee
10 - Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)

# Instructions:

01 - In a small bowl, combine sugar, warm water, and yeast. Stir well and let rest until mixture becomes foamy, about 10 minutes. Transfer flour to a flat surface and make a well in the middle.
02 - Add yeast mixture, yogurt, salt, and oil to the flour well. Knead thoroughly until the dough becomes smooth and shiny, approximately 10 minutes.
03 - Cover dough with a damp cloth and place in a warm location (near stovetop or warm oven). Allow to rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
04 - Divide proofed dough into 8 equal portions. Using a rolling pin, roll each portion into a 20 cm (8-inch) circle.
05 - Heat a skillet (preferably cast-iron) over high heat. Lightly grease surface with oil. Place rolled dough on hot skillet. When bubbles form and spots begin to brown, flip and cook other side. Repeat with remaining dough.
06 - Brush each naan with melted butter or ghee, sprinkle with fresh cilantro if desired. Serve immediately while warm.

# Notes:

01 - Naan is best enjoyed fresh and warm. For authentic texture, use a very hot cooking surface.
02 - If available, cooking naan in a tandoor oven yields the most authentic results.
