Combine 1 cup of water with the sugar and berries in a small saucepan.

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, smashing the berries with the back of a fork or a potato masher to release some of their juice.

Once the sugar has dissolved, about 2 to 3 minutes of cooking, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly.

Strain the seeds from the syrup using a fine strainer or cheesecloth into a large pitcher. Discard the seeds.

Stir in the lemon juice and remaining 3 cups of water.

Chill and serve with ice.
